SINGAPORE

Singapore is a city-state located on a small island situated at the end of the Malay Peninsula.
With its 5 million inhabitants is the second most densely populated country in the world (only after Monaco).

As I told you on the last post I landed in the beautiful airport of Changi (one of the biggest hub in Southeast Asia) and the atmosphere surrounded me quickly, with its botanic garden that introduces you on a relaxing walk until the passport control.
Here I found some weird warnings about their strict rules: first of all the death penalty for the possession or the traffic of any kind of drug, and the banning of any kind of chewing gum in the country!

Yeah is pretty weird, but after a brief research on the web I found that the country implemented this rule in 1992, because of the vandals and their bad habits, such as leave used chewing gum in keyholes, on elevator buttons and in mail boxes, caused to the government the spending of large amounts of money to remove and clean, as well as causing damage to the cleaning equipment itself, which then costed more money.
Unfortunately for backpacker's habits, this country is very expensive respect to the other ones in this area, I didn't find that a pain in the ass because I was coming from Australia and the two currencies are really similar to each other, but anyway I asked someone from the Couch Surfing website a place to rest.
It was my first experience as couch surfer and I've been hosted by a Japanese guy for 5 days.

WHAT TO SEE
Singapore has a lot of attractions, places to see and things to do.
I would really recommend to not miss Marina Bay and Chinatown areas, good places for shopping and eating during the day and stunning atmospheres for a walk under their lights during the night (have a walk through the Helix bridge).
If the temperatures are too hot for your tastes, you can take the metro and reach Vivo City, the largest shopping mall in the country, and if air con is too low, you can have a 10 minutes walk all along the harbour and reach Sentosa.
This is a popular island resort (ticket price 1 SGD) that features the theme park Universal Studios Singapore and the 2Km beach of Siloso.

ACCOMODATION
Even if I had the luck to be hosted and save some cash, when a friend of mine joined me in the country I booked and slept for few nights in a hostel to see what Singapore could offer.
Here was just thanks to my friend, that introduced me in this clean and well looked environment, the Happy Snail.
Located in Silat Avenue, is just one minute walk from a cheap food court, that sells the cheapest beers in town (between 5 and 6 dollars).
